This section of the exhibition calls upon visitors to listen with care and presence. From the creak of the floorboards and the sounds of the kitchen, to whispered conversations and children’s laughter – we come to know a home not only through images and objects, but also through sound. It is these very sounds that give a sense of closeness and security, yet they can also evoke anxiety, anticipation, or a feeling of loss. The space of this room has been designed as a sonic attic – a place for gathering that which is fleeting and hard to grasp. Sound as a medium that arises and fades, eluding complete control, yet leaving a lasting imprint on the body and the emotions.
The composition on display was created during workshops with children, led by sound artist and musician Yulia Kovalska. Participants discovered that music can serve as an authentic and natural means of expressing emotions. Using improvisation, rhythm, and body percussion, they expressed what often escapes words: joy, sorrow, anger, and hope. An integral part of the process was the recording of their own voices and household sounds, which became the building blocks of an open, living composition entitled ‘Home’.
This composition continues to grow and evolve with each new visitor. You are invited to take part, to help shape it with your own presence.
Activities:
How does your home sound to you? Say your name. Hum your favourite tune. Repeat the rhyme. Stomp your feet, clap your hands, or just stay in silence for a moment. Feel free to explore and use the objects hidden in the chest. Capture your sound and become part of the shared composition, continually shaped and expanded by other voices.
