ABOUT EVENT

From what perspective did Ernest Cole photograph — as someone inside or outside the community? What makes Harlem, a neighborhood in New York, so unique? Can photography be a form of protest?

The exhibition is a visual narrative about systemic violence and social issues, as well as the strength, resilience, and presence of the Black community in New York during the 1960s and 70s. Cole’s perspective provides context and allows for a deeper understanding of contemporary debates and discussions surrounding race, discrimination, and representation.

The temporary exhibition „Ernest Cole: Photographer in Exile” is organized by the State Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw and Against Gravity, the organizer of the 22nd Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival, in collaboration with Autograph, London and Magnum Photos.
