The New Ethnography 14

Data publikacji
18.02.2026

Issue 14 of “The New Ethnography” journal is dedicated to the representation of Polish relations with Sub-Saharan Africa in discourses related to historiography, culture, and its institutions. The direct impetus for this theme was the 2025 program of the State Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw, entitled “Against Stereotypes.” This issue summarizes reflections and experiences resulting from program activities inspired by a decolonial approach, which concerned the representation of cultures, heritage, history, and the present day of the African continent.

For the thematic section, we invited individuals who have engaged in broader reflection on perceptions, representations, and relations between Poland and countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. In this section, the Museum’s program and collections are the subject of only a few articles, as the goal is to provide a broader historical and theoretical framework for our decolonial activities within the specific context of Polish history and the present. We hope that this issue of “The New Ethnography” will open a broader discussion in the museum community, within which the theoretical perspectives of decolonizing museums will be confronted with the possibilities and limitations of museum practices.
